Barnsley v Cardiff City (FA Cup)(08/04/06)

Simon Davey¡¦s side find themselves in an unprecedented position this weekend as they make the proud trip to Wembley Stadium to face fellow Championship side, Cardiff City for a place in the FA Cup final. Simon Davey has been trying desperately to keep his team¡¦s feet on the ground since their epic 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the quarter final stage, but their cup run has definitely upset their league form, with the Tykes sitting perilously close to the relegation zone. However, success in the cup could be the catalyst for the south Yorkshire side to improve back in the league and push clear to safety. Quarter final goal scoring hero, Kayode Odejayi may be handed another chance to grab the headlines this weekend with Jon Macken cup-tied in what would have been one of the biggest occasions of the experienced striker¡¦s career. Skipper, Brian Howard remains a key player for the Tykes with the goal scoring midfielder scoring a large proportion of the goals to get Barnsley to this stage of the competition. Key players, Anderson Da Silva and goalkeeper, Heinz Muller will be watching from the stands with envy after being ruled out for the rest of the season through injury. But loan keeper, Luke Steele has also played his part in getting Barnsley to this stage with a fine display in an earlier victory at Liverpool. With the final guaranteed a Championship entrant, this can only be good for the magic of the competition.

Cardiff City played out a 0-0 draw with fellow FA Cup semi-finalists in mid-week. This nervous affair was overshadowed by the upcoming FA Cup and gave no real indication as to who we can expect to see in the final. Form goes out of the window in game such as these and with the most open FA Cup in living memory this is especially so. However, Cardiff is currently on an unbeaten run of seven games in all competitions, recording four victories in the process. The history of this team playing each other offers little help in deciding the likely winner. This season they have met just once with the result being a 1-1 draw. In total the teams have met three times in the FA Cup. Unsurprisingly, these ties have produced a win for Cardiff, a win for Barnsley and a draw! Cardiff boss Dave Jones will be glad to have navigated the mid-week tie without too many new serious injuries and with players such as Joe Ledley returning to fitness he faces only a few injury problems. Striker Warren Feeney is cup tied though he would have been a worry after pulling up in the West Brom game. Fellow attackers Paul Parry and Steve Thompson are also doubts after both picking up slight hamstring strains. However, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink returns from suspension and looks likely to return to the squad. Young full back Darcy Blake should be fit for selection after undergoing an intensive training program. So is veteran attacker Robbie Fowler who is suffering from a long term hip injury. The problem is more serious than first expected and there is now a possibility that the striker will not play again this season. One piece of good news for Dave Jones is the return of full back Kevin McNaughton from a hamstring injury that has kept him out of recent first team action. McNaughton will take his place at the back freeing up Aaron Ramsey for a potential spot in midfield.

In their last 2 meetings, the results were all Under (2.5). BF Index recorded on EC2WIN.com at 11:00 on Sunday is 47/7/46, indicates most monies are betted on the Home Win and the Away Win, and it is only a small margin. According to the historical data in this season, Cardiff City recorded 11 games with Under(2.5) in last 12 games. Kelly Index is 0.57 0.04 0.05, indicates major bookmakers rate the Draw is the most likely result. As a summary, bet on the Under (2.5) in the Asian Handicap would be a good choice.

Pick: Under (2.5) WON

Gunners count on fear factor to sink Liverpool

Arsenal will be hoping the fear factor outweighs Liverpool's vast European experience when the two sides cross swords in an all-English Champions League quarter-final.
Rafael Benitez has guided his side to two out of the last three finals of Europe's elite competition but Liverpool's Spanish boss will also be acutely aware that, on the domestic front, Arsenal have had the edge over his side in recent times.
Arsenal effectively destroyed Liverpool's best chances of silverware last season by knocking the Merseysiders out of both the League Cup and the FA Cup in quick succession, and defender Kolo Toure believes the mental scars left by those defeats can help his side take control of the tie in Wednesday's first leg at The Emirates.
"It is an exciting tie," the Ivory Coast defender said. "Last season we played them four times (twice in the league and in both domestic Cups) and we showed how strong we were - we beat them in three of those games.
"It is going to be really tight, we know that, but we have the quality and I think they will be scared to play against us.
"We need to show them that we have continued to improve and are even stronger than last season. We are used to playing against them, so we know we are in for a battle."
Arsenal go into Wednesday's match at Highbury buoyed by having snapped out of a five-match winless run in the Premier League in morale-boosting fashion, the 3-2 win over Bolton at the weekend having been secured from two goals down with ten men.
But Liverpool are also on something of a high after effectively securing their return to the Champions League next season by beating Everton, their only rivals for fourth spot in the league, 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday.
Fernando Torres's 28th goal of the season settled the derby clash and gave Liverpool a five-point cushion over their neighbours, as well as some room to breathe ahead of their trip to London.
"For the time being the pressure is off because we have got the five-point gap, even if we have a lot of hard games to come," admitted Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who has recently seen his role in the first team evolve to the point that he is now virtually a support striker for Torres.
Benitez has admitted that the success Torres has enjoyed in his first season in English football has exceeded even his expectations.
"You always have confidence in a player that arrives with energy and desire and who has great quality," Benitez told The Times. "However, the truth is that he has been a fantastic success. He has already scored 28 goals and the level of play he brings to the side and his commitment to the team is hugely significant.
"We formulated a plan when he arrived, focusing on trying to keep him up front close to the defenders because with the speed that he has, if you give him a good pass he'll latch on to it.
"The problem is, with so many games we haven't had bags of time to work on specifics. We've tried with the group to work on certain technical individual aspects as well as helping the players to learn how to execute at crucial moments.
"In Fernando's case this involves tuning up his finishing, for example. We try to find time to work as well on Steven Gerrard's new role, which he is certainly enjoying."
Stay Tune for our Tips, coming this Sat morning!
